The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has funding available for the one-year Dissertation Award that it offers to students who are enrolled in PhD programs and are planning to become a full-time college or university faculty member after earning the PhD.  The award would back-date to start in January 2018.

It offers a one-year, $20,000 stipend, payment of tuition and fees, a $500 research allowance and professional development support, and covers expenses associated with attending the annual Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching and Mentoring:  https://www.sreb.org/types-awards

Additional eligibility requirements:

Applying for the Dissertation Award: You must have:

  • Completed all coursework
  • Completed all comprehensive/preliminary exams
  • Successfully defended the prospectus before the beginning of the academic year.

In addition, the applicant must:

  • Be a member of a racial or ethnic minority group (including black, Asian American, Hispanic/Latin American, Native American or other).
  • A U.S. citizen or have legal permanent resident status.
  • Not employed outside of your department or discipline.
  • Note: The program particularly encourages applicants who seek Ph.D.s in the STEM  (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.
